Pipeline Trail At "Old Stagecoach Road" Hike
About this event
Meet at the pavilion at Bear Creek Park at the intersection of 21st St and W Rio Grande St. between 8:00 - 8:15am. We will then car pool/caravan to the trailhead, which is about 8 miles away at the intersection of Old Stage Rd (County Rd 368) and County Rd 371. Note that the last 6 miles of Old Stage Rd is a winding, gravel road. Further, there is no identification of the trailhead, you just have to know where it is!
The hike is rated (by me) as suited for experienced hikers, about 5 miles with some elevation change. The hike is another described in "Easy Hikes - Hidden Past" by Shockley & Jones. The hike will be interesting, with several stops for a brief history lesson on the stories associated with this hike, as per the book. Examples are a dynamited cut through the rocks, retaining walls, manhole covers, concrete blocks and the stone remnants of "Nanny's Cabin". The pipeline is still in use, and makes its appearance occasionally along the route. It will be a loop hike, with the return trip on County Road 371. (Note: the term "road" is used very liberally here,)
As always, bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen will likely be needed. Because of the drive up and carpooling, dogs need to be left at home.
